Biomedical Science Workshop at CCU

Through funding from the National Institute of Health’s INBRE award, we have created a 3-day workshop for high school STEM teachers.  The workshop will run from Sunday June 25th starting at 5 pm, (dinner provided on campus) through Wednesday June 28th (finishing up no later than 3 pm).

All costs are covered through our INBRE award, including meals and housing. Housing (Palmetto Hall) is provided on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.  Attendees do need to provide their own travel to the workshop on the campus of Coastal Carolina University, where ample parking is readily available (Use lot HH).

A certificate indicating that 20 hours of continuing education (CE) credit was completed will be issued upon completion of the program.

Our goal is to expose teachers to four diverse areas of research in biomedical and biological research and assist them in translating the experience and the content and process knowledge they acquire while attending this workshop into curricular enhancements within the courses they teach. The four participating faculty and the titles for their project are listed below. We will also have a discussion on the current state of STEM education in South Carolina led by Mr Ryan Carter from the Scholar’s Academy.

Paul E. Richardson:     Bacteriophage detection in environmental samples

Drew Budner:             The science of kombucha

Michelle Barthet:           Photosynthesis in action!

Megan Cevasco:            Microbial bioinformatics

The main body of the program will occur from 9-5 on Monday and Tuesday and 9-3 on Wednesday. For those staying on campus (and others able to participate) we will hold evening sessions to allow further networking as well as support teachers as they consider ways to integrate the research they have experienced into their curricular instruction.

The link to the online application is provided here (Biomedical Workshop App). We can accommodate up to 15 teachers at this workshop and plan to begin accepting teachers into the program starting on May 1st. While there is not a specific deadline for applying to participate in this program, you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible before the workshop is full.
